Pt. Vilayat Khan Style Sitar
The sitar is a classical Indian instrument that has a long, broad, fretted neck and a gourd-shaped body. The sitar has 7 strings, 11-13 sympathetic (resonating) strings and 20 frets. Melodies, rather than chords, are played on two strings; the other strings are drones tuned to the main chord of the "raga" or rag. Although some notes are played, the corresponding sympathetic strings react to and sound along with it. This creates what could best be described as a "natural reverb" or buzz. This reverb sound is one of the key characteristics that encapsulate the sound of sitar music. This "buzz" is produced by the bridge, The sitar's signature sound Jawari is produced by the string vibrating on a flat bridge with a gently curved surface. How much of the string rests on the bridge, and how steep the curves in the back and front of that contact area are all affect how much buzz is emitted and how clear the sound is.
A key feature of the sitar is its curved, movable frets, which allow for a wide variation of tuning. Among its 20-odd strings are 6 or 7 playable strings which are situated over the frets. The difference between the 6 and 7 string styles is that the latter has two extra bass strings, low pa and low sa, which give them an extra bass octave).Four of these strings, called the chikari, provide the "drone" while the remaining strings are used to play the melody, though most of the notes of the melody are played on the baj tar, or first string. Most quality-made sitars are constructed from a combination of teak and mahogany wood called toon wood
While you'll find many styles and details, there are really only two main types of sitars: the "Ravi Shankar" and the "Vilayat Khan".
The "Vilayat Khan" (V.K.), is slightly smaller than the RV style. Unlike the Ravi Shankar type of sitar, the Vilayat Khan typically features just one gourd, while the top one is eliminated. In addition, the VK type of gourd is equipped with fewer sympathetic strings and features no bass strings.
But in place of the missing bass strings, these types of sitars are constructed with an additional rhythmic accompaniment string, known as a "chickaree." This additional feature enables the Vilayat Khan type of sitar to produce a fuller and more chordal sound quality. This type of sitar is generally preferred in dark brown or black color.
